Hello everyone, Last fall we happened across a great deal on a 30' 1980 Camelot... She has been well taken care of and religiously maintained. (there is a 3" stack of documents, receipts and work orders in an overhead cupboard. Including the original bill of sale) Still, I spent the last few months going through the plumbing, electrical, drivetrain etc. just to make sure all was good before we took off for a trip to the Oregon coast and down 101 into California. (1400 mile roundtrip) Everything went extremely smooth, except the separation of a tire on the center axel in the middle of nowhere, and this brings me to my first question... 9.50 R 16.5 With only around 9K miles on all 6 tires, (9.50R16.5LT) no weather-checking, well balanced and not stored for a decade in one position... in the middle of nowhere the left center tire internally separated and became egg-shaped at 65 MPH. (thankfully it didn't come apart and tear anything up) Talking to the manager at a tire shop in the next one horse town we came to, I was informed that 16.5" tires have gone the way of the dinosaur and it was recommended that I step down to a 16" wheel and a tire with the circumference equal to stock. Has anyone else run into this issue and found a 16 or even 17"" wheel with an 8 on 6.5 lug pattern and a 2.25 positive offset? We would prefer to keep the disco-era look and vibe to the appearance, so steel wheels with stock looking wire hubcaps would be great, but will go with whatever it takes to make it less worrisome on long trips. Any suggestions on dealers or websites or whatever would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, Mike Now I'm off to explore this forum and learn... might even be able to offer some advice on something I know more about then tires. |

Finding the correct offset is the difficult part. 16 or 17 inch is your choice. The only comment I would say is that Firestone Transforce is a reasonably good choice. It does come in 16, 16.5, 17 inch. So you do have the choice to stay with the original rims. I did switch to 16 inch, before the Transforce became available. I'm now running the Transforce on my 16 inch rims. I do not have the correct offset. I did take the rear spacers of the back axles. The front is just wider than stock. I've not been able to prove any affect on handling. I have A-B'd back and forth between the OEM rims and the wrong offset rims, and really can't tell. |

Thanks for the reply Daveinet. With the limited amount of time I have had to search around, that is pretty much what I had come up with as well. It's nice to know that I can drop that off my to-do list... |

I have 16" Transforce on two Revcons, one with original rims, the other with replacement aluminum16" rims, the second vehicle previously owned by an Air Force mechanic, He had Bridgestone tires filled with nitrogen, but Bridgestone no longer sells this size tire. I have no prior motorhome experience, but my tire consultants, who have serviced motorhomes and commercial trucks, advised me to stay with the rims and buy the Transforce tires. They could have sold me rims and new tires to match but they thought the rims were fine and the alternative choices in different sizes not worth the expense. Many commercial vehicles still run on the 16.5 inch rims, including school buses and ambulances, and commercial truckers. The steel rims are harder to balance, but with new tires, balancing beads, and attention to other parts that when worn out cause vibration, my 1984 runs without vibration and comfortably on good highways. Have you tire dealer check your rims to make sure they are not cracked. rbeck 1984 King and 1988 34 |

On my slant-nose I did the Hummer H2 wheel conversion, I posted the tech specs elsewhere on the forums here. So far, other then some occasional front wheelhouse rubbing with the wheel hard over in reverse, things have been OK. I did have a back wheel spacing issue on one of the rear axles, but that was due to a factory production issue on the Revcon axle setting. A small wheel spacer took care of that rub problem. Eric |
