That is interesting. Those calipers are from an Eldorado. I knew of someone who did the conversion use old Toro calipers from the late 70s, so likely the same thing. Not sure what they used to mount the calipers. I think he just made up a plate and drilled holes in it. The biggest thing will be to figure out what size axle you have. Once you know that, you can look into bearings that will fit the axle, and the exterior fitting one of the hub kits.

Is it possible to get rid of my Hendrickson Tandem and to upgrade my rear suspension to a past 1981?

New tandem with axles, new drums, new rims?
Have you got the part numbers?

I am in Switzerland at the moment and my old 1979 drums are getting balancing weights.

Their imbalance is enormous. :o

The specialist glued weights between the fins of the 4 drums in order to eliminate their big imbalance. There is not much space between the braking drums and the rims. He used Weicon HB 300 adhesive.

High temperature resistant to 392 °F.
Short term up to 536 °F.

It is said that normal operating temperatures
for drum brakes range from 150 °F to 400 °F,
but under hard breaking conditions temperatures
can exceed 600 °F.

Test drive result up to 75 mph:

Vibrations are still there, but less intense. I hoped so much that they were gone forever.

It seems that they are getting lesser when driving over 60 mph. Holding the Revcon at this speed is now almost possibe without the feeling of the vehicle falling apart.

This has improved.

Now with balanced drums I want to try wheel balancing on the vehicle again and see if it shows a reduced imbalance which maybe could be eliminated with some extra weights on the rims.

When I tried it the first time in April the imbalance was too high.

Last option: New tandem and new axles fitting for a past 1982+ Revcon, new rims, new tires in the rear which would be about 10.000 Euros/3 months time in Switzerland.

My swiss specialist could do the job in cooperation with a DAF Trucks repair shop.

I haven' t found anybody in Austria or Germany who would be able to handle that kind of job.

I am reaching the end of the line.

We did balancing on the vehicle today.
It seems that both rims on the passenger' s side are broken.

After balancing of the 4 rear brake drums in Switzerland, the imbalance dropped e.g. from 530 grams to 75 (!) on the driver' side. Now it is 26 (first wheel on the tandem) and 11 (second wheel). The driver' s side is absolutely ok.

But the second wheel of the passenger side dropped from 530 grams to 330 only and this is getting worse (!) when adding more balancing weights.

The first wheel shows an imbalance of 160 grams.

Both rims on the passenger side are oval, it is clearly visible. We took them off and mounted them on the stationary balancing machine.

Used rims for the Revcon are not available, I am going to find somebody who can repair them. A company in Vienna (Austria) might be able to do it. They fixed the oval rims of my 1997 GMC Safari Van.

I talked to the rim repair shop near Vienna yesterday and they told me that they are able to get them fixed. Only time is a factor. It would be great if they could do it in a week.

So I will have to transport the rims from Saxony (Eastern Germany) to Vienna and back to the Revcon again (about 800 miles). I wanted to visit my family in Lower Austria and my friends in Vienna in August anyway, so it' s on our route.

This plan is still easier for me to handle instead of finding and importing new or used rims. The Revcon has a historic registration which can be revoked when using new rims. Here in Germany it' s only allowed to install original used rims on your historic vehicle. If I could find used rims in the U.S., I still wouldn' t know if they are also damaged or not.

In Austria the repair costs are about €200,-- for one rim.

Happy to hear of your progress toward the resolution of vibration problems. Your approach sounds rational to me. Thanks for keeping us informed!
